A Real Problem
Master Gardener and Certified Arborist Jim V explains to the class what stripping of bark from a tree will do. In this case, the bark has been stripped uniformly and completely around the trunk of the tree which indicates intentional damage and probably not by animals..no teeth marks, etc. The end result is that the tree will die. This is the same as weed wacking completely around the trunk and cutting into the cambium and will produce the same result, a dead tree.
