Yes, our deck does smell like bananas and no, not from Banana Daiquiris! The early evening fragrance is from our Port Wine Magnolia (Michelia figo) now in bloom. Sheila wanted to bring this tree when we moved to our current home 12 years ago and, of course, I complied. I transplanted it and then “babied” it for two years before this evergreen finally decided it was going to survive. Today, instead of the “shrub” most nursery descriptions provide, we have a tree 14+ feet and growing.
Worth the trouble . . . . yeah, it was! 
