Hellebores Today: What's New and Exciting?
Dick and Judith Knott Tyler have owned and operated Pine Knot Farms in Clarksville, VA since 1982. They became focused on the genus Helleborus and began breeding the plants. Each winter the Tylers travel around the world to the UK, Europe and The Balkans in search of new hellebores to add to their collection which includes all the species and innumerable hybrids. Their breeding work with the double forms has sparked national interest.
Judith is the author, with C. Coleston Burrell, Hellebores: A Comprehensive Guide which features many of Dick's remarkable photographs. Dick is responsible for all the slides and photographs used for talks, website, and publications.
The Tylers are former co-curators of the Garden of Winter Delights at the J.C. Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh NC. Their gardens at Pine Knot Farms have been featured in Southern Living, Virginia Gardener, and Martha Stewart Living among other publications, and on Martha Stewart’s TV show. 2016 Memphis Flower Show Lecture with Demonstration: Jeff Leatham
JEFF LEATHAM, Artistic Director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, has been creating a sensation with his floral designs and installations since he first began working with flowers at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Jeff was Awarded the prestigious “Knighthood” / “Chevalier de L’Order des Arts et Letters”, in 2014 - The French Governments its Highest Honor for Artists whom have made a significant contribution to French culture.
Jeff’s work is a combination of his love for flowers and his passion for design. His creations are bold statements, using shape, color and simplicity to produce a dramatic effect. Breathtaking and unforgettable, Jeff’s flowers and design essentials are always integral to the setting, never merely a backdrop. Jeff’s expertise continues to attract praise around the world as seen in his first two books “FLOWERS BY JEFF LEATHAM” and “FLOWERS BY DESIGN”, Jeff’s New Floral Design Inspiration book “Jeff Leatham – Visionary Floral art and Design” by Rizzoli.

Known for his floral installations that are often compared to contemporary art, His continuous collaboration with international luxury brands has allowed him to present his work in several international design expositions around the world. Such Luxury Brand’s as Alexander Wang, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bulgari, Philip Treacy, Swarovski Crystal, Givenchy, Ellie Saab, Burberry, Tiffany & Co, Waterford Crystal, Dom Perignon and Samsung have commissioned Leatham’s design signature style. Leatham’s floral design clientele is as impressive as his work, including Tina Turner, Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, The Kardashians and Celine Dion, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and President and Secretary of State Clinton.
Leatham had the Honor of designing the flowers for the Wedding of Marc Mezvinsky to Chelsea Clinton, daughter of President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Jeff also created the exquisite decor for the wedding of Eva Longoria, Avril Lavigne and Tina Turner. Jeff has also has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show episode “Dream Jobs” and many times on the Martha Stewart and Queen Latifah Shows.
One of Leatham’s greatest honors was designing the first major event since the time of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette in the famed “Galerie des Glaces” (Hall of Mirrors) at the Chateau De Versailles.

The Booksellers at Laurelwood presents Mister Owita’s Guide to Gardening
Mister Owita’s Guide to Gardening: How I Learned the Unexpected Joy of a Green Thumb and an Open Heart is the first-person, nonfiction story about Carol Wall’s unlikely friendship with Giles Owita, a Kenyan-born landscape designer who took on the arduous task of rehabilitating Wall’s neglected yard in Roanoke, Virginia. More importantly, though, he tended to Wall’s wounded spirit. Diagnosed with cancer before she met Owita, Wall had begun to lose faith in her religion, humanity, and herself.
The book follows their blossoming friendship; their unusual relationship creating a bond that bridged their disparate backgrounds and taught them both about the wonderful secrets life has in store. Wall received her third cancer diagnosis in 2012, just a few months before the book was published. Wall was too sick to make appearances, and she passed away in December 2014, just nine months after publication. Since Carol’s death, the Wall family, led by her husband Dick, has redoubled their efforts to promote Carol’s work. “It’s not hard to talk about her,” says Dick. “I like to talk about her. I have to talk about her.”

Memphis Herb Society: Knowing and Growing Your Herbal Roots
SPEAKER: Tina Marie Wilcox TOPIC: Knowing and Growing Your Herbal Roots There is much more to growing herbs than what meets the eye. Microorganisms living on and around the plant roots, together with the roots create a zone called the rhizosphere. Join Tina Marie for an evening of exploration of life underground and why that matters to herb gardeners! Tina Marie has been the head gardener and herbalist at the Ozark Folk Center State Park’s Heritage Herb Garden in Mountain View, Arkansas since 1984. She coordinates annual herb events and facilitates the production of herb seeds and plants for the park. She writes a weekly herb and garden column entitled “Yarb Tales”, which is published by the Stone County Leader and www.ozarkfolkcenter.com. She co-authored the reference book, the creative herbal home with Susan Belsinger. In 2017 she was honored with the Nancy Putnam Howard Award for Excellence in Horticulture by the Herb Society of America.
