Memphis Horticultural Society Meeting - Intorduction to Nonconnah Creek Conservancy, Urban Forest Project and The Compost Fairy with Mike Larrivee
Mike is a Licensed Professional Geologist. He is a technical adviser to the Memphis Tree Board, and the chairman of the Cooper-Young Sustainability Committee. He is the co-founder and executive Director of The Compost Fairy, a non-profit soil building initiative aimed at diverting valuable organic materials from the landfill, returning them to the community as topsoil, and creating long term jobs in sustainability sector. He is also proud to be an operational lead and urban ecologist for the South Memphis Trees project, which is in the first stages of planting four-million trees on vacant and fallow lands inside Memphis.

Herbal Work Study: Herbal Beverages
The first two hours will be spent weeding, grooming, thinning, planting, or whatever else needs doing in the Herb Garden. The last hour will be spent learning about using herbs to create drinks. I will have cold water and bug spray available, you bring your favorite hand tools for weeding and grooming (soil knives, Cape Cod weeders, old kitchen knives, trowels, pruners, gloves, etc. – no hoes or rakes needed, though). Everyone will get to go home with a handout that includes tips and recipes. Arrive at the Horticulture Building in the south end of the parking lot by 8:15a.m. The group will leave the building promptly at 8:30 a.m. Please dress appropriately: sun hats and closed toe shoes are suggested. Note: this learning opportunity is “purchased” via a barter system: you must work the first two hours (8:15 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.) to attend the last hour of class (10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.), making this a free event!). Urban Forestry Advisor Class
The Urban Forestry Advisor class for 2018 is scheduled for 5 weeks starting on Wednesday, Sept. 5th 2018. The following classes are on Sept 12, Sept 19, Sept 26 and Oct 3rd.
Thisis class is designed for the general public, municipal workers, neighborhood association and garden clubs. It involves class room lectures and field work at the Memphis Botanic Gardens and covers topics such as tree ID and selection, tree biology, insect and disease problems, inventory and much else. The 20 hours of instruction is taught by local experts and the class fee is $85.

Kim Jameson, current owner of Kim Jameson Design and previous owner of Gestures Flowers and Gifts, and our own Floriculturist at Dixon Gallery and Gardens, will lead a three-session workshop sharing her experience and knowledge of floral design. Participants will refine their skills in this hands-on series which will take each of their designs to the next level. They will learn “tricks of the trade” and create their own design to take home. Please bring clippers. All other supplies are provided. Participants may take one or all of the classes.

September 15: Fall Wreath with Natural Elements This workshop will provide techniques and instruction for using the bounty of fall to design your own beautiful wreath.
